Community Forum meeting on 7 November 2023

 Written by Lynelle Clark

The CPF Community Forum’s meeting was represented by a few concerned citizens from Brakpan with a clear message:

Be Productive. Assist when possible. Get involved. Be vigilant.

It is time for the community to take responsibility. Don’t be a complainer.

All four sectors were represented by their appointed representatives:

Constable Audrey Buthelezi SAPS Sec1 manager, Simon Mabuse CPF Sec1 Acting Chairman, Ruhan Myburgh CPF Sec2 Acting Chairman, SAPS Sec3 manager W/O Du Koker, Tinus Jordaan, CPF EXCO Chairman and Sec3 chair, W/O Stoltz SAPS Sec2 manager, Gladwell Mashego CPF Sec4 Chairman. And an EMPD officer.

They all agreed that crime in Brakpan has increased. Especially now, at the beginning of Silly Season, it is apparent.

Crimes reported were:

· Cable theft was the most important issue raised.

· Hijacking

· Armed robbery

· Jumping of walls

· Theft: cell phones and handbags

· Domestic violence

· Criminal Scouts are on the increase.

· Scrapyards and second-hand shops must be held accountable.

· House breaking

· Unsafe Cemetery

· Casino is a breeding ground for crime.

Raise awareness. Be in touch with your neighbours.

It has become more relevant to train the community in the correct protocols to be of help. By just leaving a WhatsApp is not enough. The police and patrols are not watching the groups 24/7. If you don’t get a response, call 10111.

Parents should instruct their children about the use of cell phones when walking to the shops. When distracted, they become easy targets. This is true for grownups as well. Don’t be distracted while walking. Put that cell phone away.

Concern was raised about the involvement of the community. Especially, when they see a crime is in process or to be cautious and not try to take measures in their own hands. There is a right way of contacting the police. The correct information is vital for a speedy response.

When a cable theft is in progress, alert the neighbours and drove to the scene, lights on. They will run. But if you pass by and phone the police, the chances are it will be too late.

Don’t approach a criminal. Don’t beat them. The result is that you will face a criminal charge and they will walk away, free. Don’t be provoked. Stay calm and act correctly.
